My favorite real change vendor stands on the corner of Madison and 4th. He sells his papers about half the time. The other half he is looking at a real newspaper, reading every bit. He knows that the Real Change, with all due respect, is rubbish. It goes straight away into my bin when I buy it. But I think its great how he reads. Hes so bored with staring at people with a blank look, or listening to the same George Michael tape on his circa 1983 walkman. Instead he reads, learns and keeps his mind active. Today he was not focused on selling his papers at all. He had a pencil and was doing the crossword. Thats why I like to get the paper from him. I could see myself doing the same thing if faced with selling the Real Change.
